Semester long project that focused on craftsmanship and creating an historical artifact. The Norwegian Rosemaling Chest has significant meaning to me and my family, as my great grandmother was Norwegian and we had several chests in our family's heirlooms.
Project for IAD 281, instructor Hani El Hajj.
Completed 12/8/2023.
In the 1800s, Norwegians began making these trunks to separate themselves from other American immigrants. To make color floral arrangements, they used the rosemaling style, which is a folk practice. S-scrolls, c-scrolls, and acanthus leaves were among the motifs used. Per Lysne of Stoughton, Wisconsin, introduced Rosemaling to the United States when he arrived from Norway in 1907. There are now new generations of rosemalers who have carried on the tradition and produced new styles and forms. Rosemaling originated in a region near Bergen, Norway, it is characterized by ornate curves, flowing scrollwork and floral designs, traditional styles.
