Typically, when someone is faced with a wall, whether literal or physical, they see it as something that is in their way. For our project we intend to fight that concept and create an intervention that instead offers opportunities. For our intervention we chose to focus on three themes, those being serendipity, trust, and tension.
Serendipity is defined as “good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries”. We chose to highlight this word for its correlation with chance encounters. We are hoping our intervention will act as an outlet for people to meet others or form connections that they otherwise would not be able to. Through different openings and geometric shapes, these interactions can be had whether it’s a full meet up or simply two hands grasping from one side to the other.
We chose trust because our intervention is centered in a strongly polarized area. We’re trying to foster an environment in which people feel brave enough to reach out and reach through. In order to do this our intervention needs to appear friendly and also strong. It will need to be somewhere that people are willing to be vulnerable. We incorporated playful shapes and have allowed for a lot of light to seep through the intervention to make it more approachable and encouraging. Structurally each peace relies upon another and with that we’re hoping people will do the same.
We chose tension as our last theme because it is rare for there to be vast differences and not have tension be present. We are hoping to turn the tension into something experiential rather than something to be wary of. The rope is not only structural but it also communicates this message by being tightly drawn and still appearing lighthearted. It causes the eye to move up and through the structure depicting the different paths people could take in communication.
